Story Breakdown - Devlog #11

Hi All,

This update serves as the story blueprint for Leonard's Mark. It won't be a narrative breakdown because much of the specifics are still in production but it will be an overarching veiw of the plot.

For the most part this will befollowing the steps of the Hero's Journey.

#1 Ordinary World - Exposition dump! This will be the part of the story when the player talks to a whole load of people that will tell them things that should already be common knowledge to anybody who has lived in this world their whole life. This step is basically just 'normalise your world to the player' and most games do this whether they are doing the Hero's Journey or not.

#2 Call to Adventure - Now that the heavy lifting of world building is done we can move on to character and character motivation. This will establish Keith and Keith's friend current mindset, relationship and goals, which will be joining the city guard.

#3 Refuseal of the Call - While to guards doesn't pan out for Keith it does for his friend, splitting the two up. Keith's path verges off into unexpected territory when he develops a unique magic symbol which brings down unwanted attention from those in power. (Insert potential death of a loved one here)

#4 Meeting the Mentor - Split from his friend and unsure of what to do Keith turns to a mentor figure (currently grandfather but subject to change) for guidance and advice.

#5 Crossing the Threshold - Now with a newfound sense of purpose and power Keith moves forward against those that wish him harm.

#6 Test, Allies and Enemies - Keith sets out to help the townsfolk and rebel against the oppressive regime that engulfs their lives.

#7 Approach to the Inmost Cave - Once Keith has won over the townspeople and shifted the balance of power in their favour its time to liberate his District of the city by taking the fight to the Steward of the district. In the run up to this battle Keith has to face off against his friend who guards the Steward.

#8 Ordeal - Once that's resolved Keith is free to fight the Steward for the freedom of his district.

#9 Reward - Keith has earned the freedom of the people of the slums. But has he drawn the attention of those higher up in the city's power structure?

This is where the game would end and stops the regular steps of the Hero's Journey, as I am only planning on Act 1 so far but to expand the story all you would have to do is loop through steps  four to nine.  And like I said at the start this is all subject to change but is the current blueprint that I'm working from.

The main bulk of the gameplay would be step six but there would still be things to do at the other stages.
